Union activity is co-oridnated at a local level by District Representatives in the branch network and Department Representatives in Head Office and other administration centres. District and Department Reps help in the recruitment of new members, attending Regional Council meetings acting as the voice of their members and may also attend National Conference as a delegate. District and Department Representatives are elected every two years. If you wish to contact your Representative details click here or contact us on 01295 710767.

The election of District and Department Representatives is covered in Rule 10. Download Union Rules. All candidates must have completed one year of continuous membership. Nomination forms are completed and in the event that more than one nomination form is received for a position an election will be held within the constituency. Download a Nomination Form

Tackling day to day problems regarding the well being and safety of our members is the main role of a Safety Representative. There is also the opportunity to take an active role in pilot schemes and new procedures that are planned by Nationwide. Details on how to contact your Safety Representative can be found on your NGSU Notice Board or our web site www.ngsu.org.uk.

Regional Council Officers

There nine Regional Councils: one for each branch region (North, East, South. West & London); two in NH (Products; Sales & Service and Support Services; and one in both Northampton and Bournemouth Administration Centres. The District or Department Reps in each region decide from amongst their number who will be the Council Chair; Organiser and Equality Officer. Regional Councils normally meet three times a year.

Regional Council Chair

Presiding over the Regional Council meetings and signing the minutes of these meetings is the main role of the Regional Council Chair. This role promotes the sharing of ideas and thoughts throughout the Union to the benefit of all by communicating with National Regional Officers, the National Executive Committee and District/Department Representatives. The Chair will also attend the National Conference as a delegate and representative of the members of the Region.

The role of the Regional Equality Officer is to promote equal and fair treatment for all, consult and involve members to establish their views, determine the issues confronting members, in particular those that may be specific to minority groups and represent members in the equal opportunities arena. They take an active part in the Regional Council meetings and attend the National Conference as a delegate and representative of the Region's members from an equality perspective.

Regional Organising Officer

The Organising Officer contributes to the overall recruitment and organising activities of NGSU. This includes setting in place frameworks to ensure effective communication with every member in a geographic area and promoting the benefits of the Union to non-members.

Organisers are also involved in assisting with the training and development of Union representatives to ensure a consistent level of skills and knowledge is maintained.
Officers take an active part in the Regional Council Meetings and attend the National Conference as a delegate.

The National Executive Committee is made up of the General Secretary, President, Vice-President, Treasurer, nine National Regional Officers and 6 National Executive officers.

The National Executive Committee is responsible for the overall administration and the implementation of Union policy as directed by the National Conference. Members of this Committee also form the Union team in negotiations with Management. The Committee normally has at least 6 meetings during a year.

All posts on this Committee are for a two year period, with the exception of the General Secretary which is a full time post held for the five year period. In the event of more than one nomination being received for the individual posts (or more than six nominations for the Executive Officer positions) an election will be held and this will be conducted by the Electoral Reform (Ballot Services) Ltd on behalf of the Union.

All candidates for election must be members of the Union and have completed three years continuous membership from the date shown on their current membership certificate. Candidates for the National Regional Officer vacancies must work in the respective Region. All nominations for this Committee must be in writing and signed by the Proposer and Seconder and thirty supporting signatures by members of the Union, who in the case of National Regional Officers must also work in the respective Regions.

  • Provide feedback to Regional Councils from National Executive Committee meetings
  • To play an integral part in forming strategic policy of the Union
  • When attending Regional Council meetings the Officer will:
    • Act as a source of information and reference for the Regional Team
